Dairy Health Tip:

How should vaccines be handled and stored?

Handling vaccines properly will help ensure that they remain safe and effective. For maximum vaccine performance, follow these tips:

·          Keep vaccines refrigerated. Once the bottle is opened, all contents should be used as quickly as possible; don’t store leftover vaccines as they will lose potency.

·          When using large multi-dose vaccine bottles, shake the bottle from time to time so contents don’t settle.

·          Don’t insert a dirty needle into a vaccine bottle.

·          Use different syringes for modified-live vaccines and killed vaccines. Mark them with paint or tape to keep them separate. Clean modified-live vaccine syringes with hot water only, not disinfectants. Even a trace of disinfectant remaining in the syringe can make a modified-live vaccine ineffective.

·          Use transfer needles to reconstitute products.

Place vaccine and syringes in a cooler while working cattle to keep the vaccine at the right temperature. Keep them out of direct sunlight and extreme temperatures
